Suffolk Highways is closing the A12 at Yoxford from 8pm to 5am on 19 to 21 and 24 to 26 August. Sizewell C has cancelled its own Darsham closures to match.
The A12 at Yoxford closes overnight from tonight for emergency carriageway repairs. Suffolk County Council Highways has told the Sizewell C project that the road will shut between 8pm and 5am on 19, 20 and 21 August, and again from 24 to 26 August. The project’s works tracker records the closure period as running to 5am on 27 August. (Sizewell C works tracker, Suffolk County Council Highways A12 works, 13 August 2026)
The council’s notice says the closure “is required so that essential repair work can be completed safely and as quickly as possible”. It adds that the work is being carried out by Suffolk County Council Highways and is “not part of Sizewell C works”, which is unusual on this stretch of road.
Drivers are told to follow the signed diversion. The notice does not publish the route, and we could not confirm it from a council source today.
Sizewell C has cancelled its Darsham closures
The knock-on effect is the more useful piece of news for anyone driving north from Woodbridge in the evening. Sizewell C has pulled its own A12 closures at Darsham for the same period.
“As a result of this emergency closure, our planned closures in Darsham have been cancelled,” the notice says. “This is to help reduce the level of disruption on the local road network while the A12 works are taking place.”
This corrects what we reported on 12 August. At that point the project’s bulletin of 7 August had the A12 at Darsham closed on weeknights from 10 to 21 August. The bulletin published on 14 August lists Darsham as closed only from 10 to 14 August. The Darsham nights that would have run this week are off.
Darsham still closes later in the year. The 14 August bulletin has it shut on weeknights, 8pm to 5am, from 7 to 18 September and again from 5 to 16 October, for the new pedestrian crossing. That diversion is a long one: the A12, A14, A140, A143 and back to the A12. (Sizewell C works tracker, traffic management bulletin, 14 August 2026)
Also shut tonight: Wickham Market High Street
The B1438 High Street in Wickham Market closes for one night, from 7.30pm on Wednesday 19 August to 5am on Thursday 20 August, for trial hole works. The closed section runs from the junction with Chapel Lane to the junction with Crown Lane, and the diversion is the B1438, A12 and B1078. Access to properties is being maintained.
Two sets of works therefore land on the same night, at either end of the same stretch of A12.
If you live on Fordley Road, your diversion changes
Fordley Road at Middleton cum Fordley has been closed since 10 August, and stays closed until the third quarter of 2027, for the Sizewell Link Road. The usual diversion runs by Town Farm Lane, the A12 and B1122. That route depends on the A12 being open.
The 14 August bulletin sets out the substitute: “During the emergency A12 weeknight closures (8pm to 5am, 8pm 19 August - 5am 27 August) the diversion route will be Tiggins Lane, B1121, and then follow the A12 diversion route.”
What else changed this week
- Three-way traffic lights at the B1122 and B1125 junction, near Yoxford, from 18 August to 11 September. They run off peak only, 9.30am to 3.30pm, for a new site access for the Sizewell Link Road.
- Sizewell C has given formal notice of B1122 night closures this autumn. The order, published on 11 August, covers Middleton Road, Yoxford Road and Leiston Road in phases, from the A12 junction to about 90 metres southeast of Title Road. It would run on weeknights, 8pm to 5am, from 1 September to 23 October, diverting via the B1122, B1069, A1094 and A12. Title Road at Middleton would close on weeknights from 7 September to 23 October. Both are stated as an intention to make an order rather than a made order, so the dates are planned rather than fixed. (Public notice, 11 August 2026)
- The Leiston level crossing closure still runs to 20 September. Abbey Road (B1122) is shut 24 hours a day at the crossing, after the project extended the closure by up to three weeks when a water pipe turned out not to be where the drawings put it. (Sizewell C works tracker, level crossing update)
What it means for you
If your evening journey uses the A12 north of Saxmundham this week or next, assume you will be turned round after 8pm. There is no parallel road of any size on this coast, so a signed diversion here is measured in tens of miles rather than a few streets.
Three practical points:
- The Yoxford nights are 19, 20, 21, 24, 25 and 26 August. There is no closure on the nights of 22 and 23 August.
- Travelling to Southwold or Halesworth after work is the awkward case. Leaving before 8pm avoids the closure entirely.
- Do not plan around the Darsham dates we published on 12 August. Those nights were cancelled. The September and October Darsham closures are still listed.
The county council publishes live works on the Causeway one.network map, which is the authoritative list for Suffolk: current and planned roadworks in Suffolk. We keep a running list of every closure on this coast on our Woodbridge roadworks and travel page, and it was updated today.
